Why Your Washer Won’t Spin

When the drum stays still, or spins weakly, or the whole machine shakes and walks across the floor, it is usually one of these parts causing the problem.

A worn or broken drive belt. On many top-load washers, a stretched or snapped belt means the motor runs but the drum does not turn with it.

Worn drum bearings. A grinding or squealing noise during the spin cycle, along with excess vibration, usually points to bearings that need replacement.

A failing motor or motor coupling. If the machine is silent when it should be spinning, the motor or the coupling that connects it to the transmission may have failed.

An unbalanced load or bad suspension. Excess shaking that stops the spin cycle early can be a suspension or shock absorber issue rather than a broken part, and is often a quicker, cheaper fix.

A lid or door lock sensor. Some washers refuse to spin if the lock switch is not registering correctly, even when the door is fully closed.

Signs Worth Mentioning on the Call

When you call, it helps to describe exactly what happens: does the drum not move at all, does it spin slowly, does the machine shake violently, or do you hear a grinding or squealing sound? Any of these details help us bring the right part on the first visit.
