Washer Making a Loud Banging Noise?

A washer that bangs or thumps during the spin cycle is almost always something loose or off-balance, not a worn part. We find the exact cause on site and give you a real price before we start.

Why Your Washer Is Banging or Thumping

Banging and thumping are a different problem from a grinding or squealing sound. If your washer squeals or grinds during spin, that’s usually worn drum bearings — see our Washer Not Spinning Repair page for that. A bang or thump means something is physically hitting or shifting inside the machine. Here’s what causes it most often:

An unbalanced load. Heavy items bunched on one side of the drum, like a comforter or a load of towels, throw the machine off balance and cause it to thump against the cabinet during spin. This is the single most common cause and often isn’t a repair at all.

Uneven or unlocked leveling feet. If the machine isn’t sitting level and firmly on the floor, it rocks and bangs during spin even with a balanced load.

Shipping bolts left in place. On a newer or recently moved washer, transit bolts that hold the drum still for shipping need to be removed before use — leaving them in causes a hard banging noise during spin.

Worn or broken suspension springs or shock absorbers. These parts keep the drum steady as it spins. Once they wear out or break, the drum swings and knocks against the cabinet.

A foreign object caught between the tub and drum. Coins, buttons, or an underwire can slip past the basket and knock around during spin, which sounds like a sharp, repeated bang.

Signs Worth Mentioning on the Call

Let us know if the noise happens with every load or only large ones, whether it’s a bang/thump or more of a grinding/squealing sound, and whether the machine is new, recently moved, or has been in place for years. That helps us bring the right parts on the first visit.

What a Repair Visit Looks Like

We start by checking the load balance, leveling feet, and for any leftover shipping hardware, since those account for a large share of banging complaints and often need no parts at all. If the machine still bangs with a balanced, level load, we check the suspension components and drum for anything loose or caught inside. Once we’ve confirmed the cause, we walk you through the fix and cost before doing any work.
