Why Your Washer Won’t Drain

If your washer finishes a cycle with water still sitting in the drum, the cause is almost always one of a handful of parts. A trained eye can usually tell which one it is within a few minutes of inspection.

A clogged drain pump or hose. Coins, lint, socks, and small items get pulled into the pump and block the flow. This is the single most common cause of a no-drain washer.

A failing drain pump motor. Pumps wear out over time. If it is humming but not moving water, or silent altogether, the motor itself may need replacement.

A kinked or clogged drain hose. If the hose behind the machine is pinched, bent, or clogged further down the line, water has nowhere to go.

A bad lid switch or control board signal. On some models, the pump will not engage at all if the machine thinks the lid is open or a sensor is misreading, even though drainage hardware is fine.

What to Check Before You Call

A few quick checks can save you a visit, though most no-drain issues do require a technician to fully clear or replace. Make sure the drain hose is not visibly kinked behind the machine, and if your model has an accessible pump filter, check it for an obvious clog. If the machine is still not draining after that, it is time to call.
